What are the reasons for getting an arm lift?

There are several reasons to consider an arm lift, including excess skin, genetic fat accumulation, skin laxity and sagging soft tissues. These issues can result from significant weight loss, for example, and lead to an undesirable appearance. If they cannot be resolved through exercise alone, patients may consider surgical skin stretching options.

Improved Arm Contour

A successful arm lift procedure performed in Turkey removes excess skin and fat from the upper arms. This creates a smoother, firmer and more toned arm shape. It improves overall body proportion, especially after major weight loss. Eliminates the sagging and excess fatty appearance of the upper arm when the arms are raised. Provides regional rejuvenation. Moreover, if you take care of your weight balance, it will last a lifetime.

Psychological Reasons

Arm lift surgery can significantly boost your confidence and self-esteem. Seeing your newly contoured arms in the mirror may motivate you to maintain a youthful and fit appearance. Many patients are motivated to adopt healthier eating habits and a more active lifestyle after the procedure. Hearing positive comments from others about your slimmer, firmer arms can also be a powerful motivator and source of satisfaction.

Better Fit in Clothing

Following arm lift surgery, patients often find that their arms no longer feel restricted by sleeves or loose-fitting tops. This makes it easier to wear sleeveless or form-fitting clothing without feeling self-conscious. Patients often feel more comfortable wearing a wider variety of outfits and no longer feel the need to hide their arms under long sleeves or baggy clothes. They feel more confident wearing strappy tops and sleeveless styles

Details About Arm Lift Surgery in Turkey

Arm contouring, specifically brachioplasty (arm-lifting surgery), has become popular among 2 groups:

  1. people who have lost a lot of weight
  2. those in the aging population who want to keep their arms looking young.

Well, what is the goal here? To achieve a firm, smooth and attractive upper arm contour.

Since the 1930s, various surgical and non-surgical techniques have been developed and refined to improve the appearance of the arm. A recently published review of medical literature illustrates how far the field has progressed. While there is no universal agreement on the ‘best’ technique, surgeons aim for change in;

  • The amount of excess fat and skin
  • The specific location of sagging (e.g. upper arm only vs. arm plus chest).
  • The degree of skin laxity

Depending on the severity of the deformity, saggy arm treatment options may include:

  • Liposuction alone
  • Skin excision (removal)
  • A combination of both.

The steps of arm lifts in Turkiye

The typical steps of an arm lift surgery in Turkey follow internationally accepted protocols:

Step 1: General Anesthesia

Commonly surgeons prefer general anesthesia or sometimes intravenous sedation. The choice depends on your medical condition and the hospital’s surgical preferences. Turkish plastic surgeons conduct a thorough pre-op assessment including complete blood count (CBC), coagulation profile (PT, aPTT, INR), BUN, Liver Function Tests, ECG, EKG, and chest X-ray to determine the safest method.

Step 2: The incision

Your surgeon plans the length and location of the incisions based on the amount of skin.

Brachioplasty steps

  • Incision in the inner arm: From the armpit -axilla- to the elbow, on the inner arm.
  • Back of the arm: The cut is made on the back of the arm. This is better for your skin in some cases.
  • Minimal incisions: The cut is very small. This is used when there is only a little skin laxity, usually just in the upper arm near the armpit.

At Vantage, our surgeons use liposuction along with skin excision to reduce fat volume before skin tightening. Once the excess fat has been removed, your surgeon will reshape and tighten the tissue under the skin using stitches. Then the skin is stretched over the new shape.

Step 3: Closing the Incisions

Surgeons in Turkey use absorbable sutures, which dissolve naturally in 6 weeks to 3 months. In some cases, surgeons use removable stitches, taken out within a week or so. Compression garments are applied post-surgery to reduce swelling.

Step 4: Results

Final results continue to improve over 3 months as swelling resolves.

Preparations I need to make before surgery

  1. Have medical check-ups and lab tests: Your surgeon may ask you to have blood tests, an electrocardiogram (EKG), or other checks before the operation to make sure you are well enough for surgery.
  2. If you need to, change the medication: You may be asked to stop or change some of your medications. This includes stopping blood thinners, aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and some herbal supplements, as they can increase the risk of bleeding.
  3. You should stop smoking at least 2 to 4 weeks before your operation. Smoking can make it harder to breathe, delay healing, and increase the risk of problems with the wound and scarring.
  4. Eating good food helps your body heal more quickly. Don’t drink alcohol or eat heavy meals for 48 hours before your procedure.
  5. Shower before surgery day: Have a full-body shower the night before or morning of surgery, but don’t use lotions, deodorants, perfumes or makeup.
  6. Wear loose, comfortable clothing: On the day of your surgery, wear a top that you can easily take off without lifting your arms.
  7. Arrange transportation and aftercare: Arm lift surgery is usually done in a hospital or clinic. You can also arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours after your surgery, as your arm will not be very mobile.

What awaits me during recovery?

Immediately After Surgery

After the operation, you will be taken to a recovery room where your vital signs will be checked as the anaesthetic wears off.

Your arms will be covered in surgical dressings or bandages. You will usually be given a tight garment or elastic bandage to help reduce swelling and support your new arm shape.

In some cases, small tubes (called drains) may be placed under the skin to remove extra blood or fluid. These are temporary and normally go within a couple of days.

The healing in the following period

One of the main differences in arm lift recovery is that you can’t move your arm much during the healing process, especially in the first 2 to 4 weeks. Things like raising your arms above your head, reaching for things, stretching to the side, or lifting anything heavy can hurt the cut and make it take longer to heal.

  • Some examples of these movements are:
  • Placing items on high shelves
  • Drying or brushing your hair
  • Carrying grocery bags or lifting cookware
  • Reaching behind to open doors or windows

Instead, you should keep your arms relaxed by your sides, and you can move your elbows and wrists a little bit for things you do every day, like eating, using a phone or writing.

Swelling is usually most noticeable on the inner upper arms, specifically between the armpit and above the elbow, where there is less skin and fat. Sometimes, the swelling can spread to the elbow. You might feel your arms getting heavy, tight or sore when you move them.

  • First 2 weeks: It’s very swollen and tight. Your arms might feel stiff and firm, and you might feel a pulling or tingling feeling near the cut.
  • Weeks 3–4: Most patients start to feel better as the swelling goes down.
  • By week 6: Most of the swelling you can see goes down.
  • Up to 3 months: You might get a little bit puffy, especially after exercising.

Home Care Instructions

You will receive personalised care guidelines after your operation, which will typically include:

  • A guide to cleaning and dressing the surgical site
  • How to check and clear drains (if there are any).
  • When should you replace or remove dressings?
  • When to return for follow-up appointments
  • There are some signs that you should watch out for, like fever, unusual swelling, or fluid coming out.

Wound care after arm lift

Medicine use and careful wound care are vital to stop problems and get the best result from your brachioplasty.

Surgeons usually prescribe:

  • Paracetamol (also known as acetaminophen) is often the first medicine that is given to you to stop the pain. You can take this medicine every 6 to 8 hours when you need it. It’s safe and effective for mild to moderate pain.
  • NSAIDs (e.g. ibuprofen or dexketoprofen) are used to reduce inflammation and pain. They should be taken at least every 8 hours for up to 5–7 days, unless your doctor says you shouldn’t.
  • Short-term opioids (e.g. Tramadol or Codeine) are for more intense pain in the first 2–3 days. These should be used carefully and the dose should be reduced slowly to avoid dependency.

Most plastic surgeons will tell you that you need to take antibiotics by mouth for between five and seven days.

Eligibility

What is the best age for arm lift?

There is no strict age limit, but most people who apply are aged between 30 and 65. The best patients are:

  • People who do not smoke.
  • They are healthy.
  • They have either reached or are close to their goal weight.
  • Your skin is loose because it’s not as elastic as it should be.

Elderly patients can have the procedure if they pass a medical examination and understand the possible risks.

  • Patients over 65 often have thinner, more fragile skin, which can make it take longer to heal, and can make bruising or wound separation more likely.
  • In younger patients (under 30), poor skin elasticity is less common unless caused by extreme weight loss, meaning arm lift surgery is not as often needed unless there’s significant sagging.

Risks and safety of arm lift surgery in Turkey

As with any procedure, there are potential risks with the brachioplasty procedure, such as infection, hematoma or visible scarring. But in general, it is considered a safe and effective surgery when performed by qualified specialists. Patient satisfaction is higher, especially when the treatment plan is individualized based on the individual’s anatomy and needs.

Although infection and visible scarring are among the complications after armlift surgery, they don’t happen very often (~1–3% for infection; ~10% for hypertrophic scars). To reduce the risk, keep the cut clean and dry, avoid heavy lifting, and follow post-op instructions on dressing changes and antibiotics. To improve the appearance of your scar, you can apply silicone gel or sheets regularly, after informing your surgeon. Gently massage the scar once it’s healed. Make sure you protect the area from the sun with SPF 50+.
